Another question I have is: can I shoot SLUGS out of my regular 30 inch full choke 12ga 870 barrel. I dont have much experience with shotgun slug shooting, do you need a special barrel for that or just buy some slugs pop them in and shoot away with any kind of shotgun barrel?

Just the barrel? A Rem 870 Xpress with an 18 inch barrel is pretty cheap. Why not just get that?

New avatar is pretty funny.

Yea youre probably right, new barrel looks to be 150-200 for a good one, or I can get the whole gun for 319 and have two of them since I already have a real nice vintage 870 wood stock with long barrel full choke.

That's the same one I have. I paid considerably more than $319. However, I bought it from a local guy that I can count on to always come up quickly with whatever I need, so I'm not stressing.

I would jump on that if you have the funds available.

Re: Want an 18 inch barrel for Remington 870

Back in the "old days" you could find a used or chopped down 18" riot barrel for a Remington 870 for around $20...and sure enough some ol' boy would have a barrel of different ones. Today, the retail cost of a new 870 barrel with Vent Rib, screw-in chokes can be as much as a good used complete shotgun...

I would shop around at local gun shows for used Remington Express (like the one yer looking at) or extra barrel--even a long one you could cut down.

And no, I wouldn't recommend slugs out of a full choke because it could result in higher pressures due to tighter constriction at the muzzle, more felt recoil, and may throw point of impact...Cylinder (no Choke), Skeet, or Improved Cylinder (my preference) are best.

Id LOVE to find an 18 inch Rem barrel for my 870 for 50 bucks, so I could interchange it with my full choke 30 inch. However, I just worked out the details to order that Xpress for 319, that is a very good deal, my gun shop guy is gonna transfer it for me for free.

Last year I found a killer deal on Ebay. Brand new HASTINGS 18" fully rifled with integral cantilever scope mount for $130. A sporting goods store in Wisconsin....

2.5" groups at 100 yrds - all day with Remington Buckhammer Slugs.

I'd try Ebay....even if you hate Ebay.....

Also try www.gunbroker.com it is like Ebay for guns....

Last thought - Mossberg makes barrels for the remington 870...cost less than Remington...just as good.

I have a NIB 18" 12-gauge 870 barrel that is excess to my needs. I bought it right before I came across a killer deal on an 870P. It is Remington stock number 24620 and is labeled "12 ga/18" CYL Express Police Barrel".

If someone on the board wants it, it is theirs for $65 shipped anywhere in the 48 states.

I bought an 870 and it came with two barrels 26" smooth bore for shot and a 20" rifled barrel for slugs.

Kicks like a mule.

I don't know if you can shoot slugs from you smooth bore barrel but they won't spin like they do when they come out of my 20" barrel.

I got mine at dicks sporting goods for $359 on sale a couple years ago.

Would love to get this from you but it looks like I got beat for it by Mtnman. If not let me know and I will send out the money to you right away.

Yup, the barrel is SPF to Mtnman.

Do NOT shoot slugs out of a full choke barrel. I saw the results from someone who got away with it until the barrel burst. Your 30-inch full choke barrel is worth something to someone like me who shoots trap with an 870TB.

Cool, well keep an eye out for an 18 inch and I will happily trade you my 30, its brand new only been shot a few times. Would be happy to work out a trade if you find anothe 18 incher. Im always around, just let me know.

Another option no one has yet mentioned...have a gunsmith cut your 30 inch barrel down to 21 inches (my preferrence) and THREAD it for SCREW-IN CHOKES. I have had this done to a vent rib Remington barrel with great results.

You get a well-balanced, fast-handling shorter barrel for riot control, but still long enough for hunting and all you need is a couple of extra chokes: Cylinder or Improved for slugs and buckshot and modified or full for birdshot...

Re: Want an 18 inch barrel for Remington 870

So you can shoot slugs with the proper choke, it doesnt necessarily have to be a rifled barrel?

SilverCity 09-14-2008 04:33 PM

Re: Want an 18 inch barrel for Remington 870

Standard smoothbore shotgun barrels use the Foster or Brenneke-type slugs. Rifled shotgun barrels are designed to use the sabot slug.
